Create a New Lawn from Seed
Start by clearing the area of weeds and grass. You can do this by spraying with Roundup (which needs a few weeks for the weeds and grass to die but leaves no residues in the soil) or by digging them out.
Dig up the soil. Dead grass can be mixed into the soil for added organic matter. Alternatively, cover the sprayed-out dead grass with a lawn mix product.
Mix in some Yates Thrive Lawn Starter fertiliser. It has the right nutrients to encourage good growth.
Rake to level the area.
Choose the right seed. Lush Sun ‘n’ Shade is versatile for most situations.
Spread seed, first in one direction, then the other (this gives a more even result).
Lightly rake again and water gently.
Spread a thin layer of sphagnum moss over the seed.
Water well and keep moist through the germination period. Then water less frequently but more thoroughly. This trains roots to grow down.
Watch out for birds eating seeds. If the problem’s severe, you may need to put a net over the seed (raised up on pegs so that the birds can’t reach the seed.
Avoid walking on the new lawn until the grass is well established and don’t mow until it’s about 10cm high.
Once established the lawn should be kept at about 5cm high.
