Lawn Care

Happy New Year green fingers,
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and didn’t
neglect your plants over the holiday break. Most of you will be
heading back to work this week, which is a perfect time to get back
into your garden routines if you’ve been a bit slack.
My garden is flourishing with produce in abundance since Christmas!
Everything planted in spring comes on at once now and there has been
plenty to share with other family members. I’ve currently got so many
purple climbing beans, (Yates “Purple King”) I don’t know what to do
with them. Anybody got any delicious recipes they care to share for
ways to use this stunning vegetable? The lettuces, transplanted out
into the raised garden from the Arthurs Greenhouse prior to
Christmas, are doing fantastically and more than enough for myself
and family. Beautiful heads of broccoli are now appearing but do
watch these carefully as they can be the perfect size one day and 2-3
days later can be overgrown and just too big. The beetroot looks
like it will be ready for harvesting within the week and the Cherry
Bomb tomatoes in the hanging basket are also ready for picking –
they have done particularly well. Both the zucchini and cucumbers are
also providing a continuous quantity to give variety to the weekly
meals and combined with the fresh herbs, add a taste sensation to the
summer cooking. The purple basil is doing particularly well. And
finally, the sunflowers are just finishing and so I think it might be
time to plant my “Giant Russian” ones for a late summer display.
The weather has been hot lately and I’ve noticed many front lawns
looking sparse, so I’m going to share some tips on creating the
perfect lawn this week. Why bother giving grass attention? Lawns are,
in most gardens, the main feature. What’s the point of pouring blood,
sweat and tears into your garden only to have brown, dying patches in
your lawn? If you have ever looked at a cricket pitch or rugby ground
you can appreciate how stunning a well-kempt lawn can look.
If you are starting a new lawn from scratch there are several options
available to you, including laying turf, planting creeping grass or
sowing seed. For more information check out chapter 10 in the Yates

If you have an existing lawn that is looking a little worse for wear
thanks to the hot summer weather, a deep soaking in the morning once
a week will encourage roots to grow deeper and help retain water
during hot spells. Frequent watering helps growth and colour of your
grass.
Don’t let your lawn get too high and don’t give grass a brutal chop –
about 4cm during summer is recommended. A light mow will encourage
new growth and help control weed growth. Another hint is to use
fertiliser, like Thrive Granular Lawn Food to help growth, health and
stop discolouration of the grass. Did you know that frequent
fertilising can help your battle with weeding? Well fed grass grows
bushy and there is little space for weeds to grow.
Of course, some lawn weeds cause chaos no matter how dedicated you
are to watering and fertilising. Weedkillers really are miracle
products, especially if you like walking around your garden barefoot.
My favourite weedkillers are Turfix Lawn Weed Spray, Prickle
Weedkiller and Weed ‘n’ Feed Liquid. Remember to read instructions
carefully before using. Yates DAS is brilliant at killing weeds along
fence lines, driveways and paths.
Garden writer Dennis Greville gives a fantastic tip in the Yates
Garden Guide: “Dry patch is an unsightly feature of the summer lawn.
It is usually caused by compacted soil or underlying roots and
stones. It can sometimes be cured by watering the affected spot with
2 teaspoons of dishwashing liquid dissolved in 10 litres of water. A
soil wetter will also do the trick.â€
You also may not know that summer is the worst time to landscape your
lawn. It’s best to dig up and grow lawns according to what season the
grasses grow. Summer season grasses can handle an overhaul in spring
and for cool grasses winter and autumn is best.

Happy Christmas Hamish. Great to read your blog in 2010. I look forward to reading heaps more from you this year. Really enjoy your tips. I got the surprise of my life today. I didn't think cranberry trees flowered in the second year but my little one has.
