Create a New Lawn from Seed
- Start by clearing the area of weeds and grass. You can do this by spraying with Roundup (which needs a few weeks for the weeds and grass to die but leaves no residues in the soil) or by digging them out.
- Dig up the soil. Dead grass can be mixed into the soil for added organic matter. Alternatively, cover the sprayed-out dead grass with a lawn mix product.
- Mix in some Yates Dynamic Lifter. It has the right nutrients to encourage good growth.
- Rake to level the area.
- Choose the right seed. Yates Tough & Hardwearing Lawn Seed Blend is versatile for most situations. Yates survivor is particularly tough.
- Spread seed, first in one direction, then the other (this gives a more even result).
- Lightly rake again and water gently.
- Spreading a thin layer of sphagnum moss over the seed, will help retain moisture.
- Water well and keep moist through the germination period. Then water less frequently but more thoroughly. This trains roots to grow down.
- Watch out for birds eating seeds. If the problem’s severe, you may need to put a net over the seed (raised up on pegs so that the birds can’t reach the seed.
- Avoid walking on the new lawn until the grass is well established and don’t mow until it’s about 10cm high.
- Once established the lawn should be kept at about 5cm high.
