Yates Kikuyu Lawn Seed Blend

Yates Kikuyu Lawn Seed is a unique blend containing kikuyu, a very hardy, spreading turf variety that grows best in the warmer months of the year, but maintains a light green colour through winter. This makes it an ideal blend for sun-soaked yards of northern North Island areas including low maintenance coastal sites. The blend also contains a fast germinating “nursery” grass to minimise soil erosion and reduce weed competition while the kikuyu seedlings establish.

Active-Gro Advanced Coating Technology

Yates Lawn Seed is specially designed to make it easier to establish new, or rejuvenate existing lawns from seed. We start with professional quality turf type seed and then optimise its performance with our ACTive-Gro Advanced Coating. Using the latest in coating technology, seed is treated with a lightweight film coating that protects against fungal disease and bird theft. Choosing Yates Lawn Seed with ACTive-Gro coating is the first step to ensuring you grow a thick, lush and beautiful lawn.

4 easy steps to a beautiful new lawn

  1. Prepare the soil by digging to a depth of 10-15cm, rake and level to produce a firm and even surface. If soil is acidic add Yates Garden Lime ensuring pH is between 6-7.
  2. Leave area for approximately two weeks or until weeds begin to germinate. Light watering will be required to initiate weed germination. After weeds have started to germinate, spray the entire area with Roundup Weedkiller Concentrate. This ensures your lawn will not have to compete with weeds for nutrients while establishing.
  3. Once the weeds have died off, lightly rake over the area to loosen the soil. First spread Yates Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food, then Yates Lawn Seed. Scatter first half in a North-South direction and the remaining half in an East-West direction and lightly rake over. Note: Wear gloves when handling seed. Wash hands after use.
  4. Avoid traffic, including pets, on the area until the lawn is well established. Important – keep the newly sown lawn damp at all times by watering regularly with a fine mist spray. This may mean watering several times a day in hot or windy conditions. Lawn should be lightly mown when it reaches 5cm in height and then gradually reduced to a minimum of 3cm.

Recommended for northern North Island regions only. Not suitable for areas that experience sustained frosts in winter. Prefers a full sun position. Recommended sowing months are November to February.

Best results will be achieved if sown in late spring/early summer. Sowing in autumn may inhibit the full establishment of the kikuyu prior to the onset of winter. Sowing when soil temperatures are less than 15° Celsius may lead to the lack of kikuyu germination and establishment.
