Named for its curious red spring flowers that resemble the beak of the New Zealand native parrot, the kaka, kakabeak makes a great filler plant and creates a wonderful burst of seasonal colour.

The NZ Department of Conservation estimates there are only around 150 plants left in the wild, so kakabeak is on the critically endangered species list.

Kakabeak prefers a sunny position, so in the wild it’s found on steep sites like cliffs, rocky crags and slips.
