Gardens, Paths & Driveways (Non-selective Control)
Yates Basamid
A soil fumigant for the control of soil fungi, nematodes, most soil insects, and weed seeds. It can be used in vegetable gardens, flower beds, cold frames and glasshouses.
Features
- Soil sterilant
- Controls fungi, nematodes, soil insects and weeds.
- Easy to use shake pack.
How It Works
The granules work by releasing gases into the air spaces between the soil particles. The gases kill soil organisms and plant material, then dissipate leaving no long-term toxic effects.
Ingredients
970g/kg dazomet in the form of a pellet.
Directions for use
- Sprinkle the contents of one pack over 9.9 square metres of soil surface and immediately mix the granules thoroughly with the soil (with a spade or hoe), to a depth of 15-23cm, or to a depth of 30cm for tomatoes if wilt fungi are a problem.
- Seal the soil surface to prevent the gas escaping by treading or ‘heeling’ or by pressing with a roller. Then sprinkle the surface with water to give a surface crust. A plastic cover can also be used provided it seals the treated surface, so retaining the disinfecting gas.
- After 7 days dig the soil with a spade or hoe to no deeper than the depth of mixing to let the gas out (and air in). Work the soil 2-3 weeks later if the fishy smell persists. If temperatures are cold, delay initial digging for 2 weeks. The longer the disinfection period the better.
- Plant or sow after all traces of gas have been removed, when there is no fishy smell remaining. A period of 3-6 weeks is necessary with cold soil temperatures (10°C). With warm soil temperatures (20°C) 10-14 days are usually sufficient. Check that the gas has been removed by sowing mustard or radish seeds in soil taken from the treated area. If the seeds germinate the soil will be ready for planting or sowing.
NOTE: Transplants should be raised on clean disinfected soil to ensure that diseases or pests are not introduced into the clean garden, thus nullifying the effects of disinfection. Use only clean tools – disinfect footwear and any garden implements before entering the fumigated area. For best results use in the early autumn after crops have been removed.
