Science experiment
What happens when worms are under the ground? Make a mini worm farm and see exactly what goes on. Make your predictions and watch as it unfolds before your eyes. Science experiments can be super interesting and so much fun!
What you need
- large plastic bottle
- earthworms from the garden
- soil
- sand
- dead leaves
- water
- cling wrap
- dark or black paper
- a pencil
Activity
- Cut the top off of a large plastic softdrink bottle.
- Fill the bottle with layers of soil and sand.
- Add half a cup of water to the soil and put dead leaves over the top of the soil.
- Carefully dig around in the garden outside and try to find 2 or 3 earthworms and add them to your soil. Be gentle with the worms.
- Cover the top of the bottle with cling wrap and poke some holes in the top with a pencil.
- Sticky tape the dark paper around the sides of the bottle.
- Place the bottle in a cool, very shady spot. Add 2 teaspoons of water each day to keep the soil moist.
- After 10 days, take the dark paper off.
- You should see that the worms have mixed up the soil and sand and made tunnels.
Reminder:
- After your experiment has finished, don't forget to return the worms to the garden where you found them.
