There is a lot of available real estate in our garden right now.

Last weekend we cleared the last of the chilli and capsicums. They were prolific this year and we harvested heaps. I have dried and ground many of the chillies and frozen bags of capsicum. We've really enjoyed bringing the slightly red tinged fruit inside and watching them turn an intense red before we preserve them. But the weather is turning now and it was time to say goodbye.

We pulled out our strawberry plants around a month ago, they were 3 years old and I havn't been clever enough to get new ones up and running. We took some of the runners up to our kids garden - but we intend putting in new store bought plants this year.

We have had great success with our brassica under the shelters made by the big H and have another 20 or so still growing - these have slowed down a bit with the colder weather but we are still eating our own cauli, cabbage and broccoli - a huge saving when you see what they cost at the supermarket.

I've pulled the last of the carrots and they'll keep us going for a month or so - thrilled with them this year.

So still left in the garden - rhubarb, parsley, leeks, silverbeet, lettuce, broccoli, chives and cauli. Enough to supplement the potatoes, onion, pumpkin, kumara, beans and tomatoes I have stored/frozen/preserved for the winter months.

Growing your own is so worth it!
