Today was my last day at work for the year. I work for a national media company but we have just a small local office - there are two of us. We celebrated with a half a glass of pinot gris and, as we had agreed there were no gifts.
But I did present my colleague (and dear friend) with a bunch of our sweet peas. The fragrance in our office was delicious and she was thrilled with them. I did not dare tell her that we have been picking these daily for weeks now and filling vases all around the house.
The more you pick sweet peas, the more blooms they will produce. If the flowers don't turn into seeds they think to themselves " I haven't made seeds yet, so I need to make more flowers". I have been picking and picking and picking for the past 3 weeks. There are blooms I can't reach so SH brings out the ladder and I cut and he foots the ladder and holds on to the bunches. I am sure they will start to fade soon, but meanwhile our house is filled with their sweet, delicious fragrance.... and so are the houses of our friends.
Sweet peas are one of the many joys of our spring/summer garden and right now they just keep on giving.
