If this last week can teach us anything, it is spring is not a season to be trusted. One moment everything is going well, and you dare to believe that maybe this could be that perfect season where the stars align and the transition from winter to spring and into summer will be smooth and pleasant. I even abandoned my winter warmers for shorts and tee-shirts! And then all heck breaks loose! Needless to say, I’m back in my thick socks and warm jumpers.
I hope the dramatic weather hasn’t been too tumultuous in your gardens with no lasting damage. The good thing about this time of year is that if a seedling doesn’t make it, there is still plenty of time to sow more.
I don’t expect the unpredictability of spring has finished with us yet and as much as I hate to say it, experience tells me there are a couple more stormy outbursts still to come. There is no hurry to get things into the garden. Plants planted in warmer soils always do better than those planted too soon. It is all about slowing down to nature's pace and listening to what the garden wants, not what we want to do.
We should have more time to get things done in the garden though now that we are into daylight savings time and past the spring equinox where the lengths of the days and nights are the same. Longer days are something to look forward to as much as warmer, dryer conditions.
In my garden the preparation and projects are coming along nicely. I got to a point where I felt comfortable enough to write a master list without it feeling overwhelming and I look forward to picking a task and getting it done. Half the satisfaction comes from crossing it off the list! But speaking of overwhelming I think I have a good couple of days of transplanting ahead of me. All the seedlings are growing at different rates, but by staggering the seed sowing, making things easier a few weeks ago, has meant everything is reaching the transplant stage at the same time! I knew it was too good to be true.
The forecast in my neck of the woods for the next week is less than ideal , so maybe having things to do in the greenhouse isn’t such a bad thing after all.
