It's been a hot day in Whanganui as I'm sure it has been in many parts of Aotearoa. We got outside and did some gardening yesterday and made a plan for today - the main crux of which was getting out into the garden in the morning to beat the heat.
Several years ago SH buried a metal barrier into part of one of our gardens so that I could grow yams without them straying into the rest of the garden. The first year we got a good crop but, despite feeding and heaps of compost the last few years have been a bit of a failure. So I decided they needed to go, but to ensure there are no small bulbs left we had to take out 6 inches of soil and dispose of it somewhere other than our compost. We have a neighbouring property where (with permission of course) we were able to barrow the soil. It was hard, heavy work, my sore upper arms are testament to that, but we got it done and I now have an extra bit of garden filled with new compost and ready for planting something new.
We also decided to pull up the remainder of our small row of carrots. A couple had gone to seed and split but we were happy with the harvest and they will keep in the vegie part of SH's beer fridge (thank you for sacrificing some space in there) for at least a month.
It's been a rewarding gardening weekend topped off with a pork belly slow roasted for 4 hours in the bbq with our own beans, peas, carrots, broccoli and potatoes.
Loving summer so far!
