Welcome to May! Ordinarily this is my slowest month, more because I prefer to hunker down indoors in the ‘cold’ weather. I put cold in the ‘…’ because it isn’t really – not compared to what winter has to offer. So, a few years ago I began a movement – well – it is just me, but it could become a movement of #MakeMayCount.
May needn’t be a month that sails by with no real achievement or progress, it can be a fruitful month with uncompleted tasks finally finished, new projects started or just a regular and consistent attempt at maintenance to get things in a good position to stay in control over the winter months, so spring isn’t such a burden.
But this month is looking like it may be more challenging than usual, with so far at least a third of it scheduled to be wet and miserable. But there will be gaps in the clouds so I can race out and get stuff briefly between showers. Failing that I have a bright red raincoat that has already seen a lot of action recently.
I still have cover crops to sow – I am kicking myself for not getting it done in the recent dry spell but there was another more pressing task that was more urgent.
The key action for this month is weed management and getting the garden to a point where there is no longer a boom and bust with the in and out of control areas and replace it with a little and often which is a lot quicker to achieve.
The best approach I have found is no matter how bad the worst area is, it is better to take care of what has already been done with a quick whip around and then get started on the weedy bit. It might take a few days longer to get the big job finished but the good bits haven’t unravelled in the meantime.
Do you set goals for each month or just potter about getting things done? What would you like to achieve by the end of the month?
As always if you have any problems or anything you need help with or if you want to get in touch leave a comment below. I’ll be here on the rainy days, checking on things.
