It feels great to get stuck into the garden and I love coming back inside with dirt under my nails. However not all things feel great. I got my spuds in but there was some digging involved. As a result, the old muscles were a little achy for a day or two.
Then I was weeding and a stubborn weed I was pulling on with all my might suddenly gave way and unexpectedly my hand met with a brick wall. I now have a Savlon sodden bandaid on my thumb. The Savlon is necessary because I finished weeding the bit I was working on before going inside for a bandaid and got dirt all through it! I really should wear gloves.
But the most annoying thing that happened last week resulted in a trip to the doctors. There was a rusty spikey thing in the garden at about head height and every time I walked past it I told myself to remove it. But I never did – until I banged my head on it, and then checked to see if there was blood by rubbing it with my dirty hand. Then I became all paranoid about tetanus and found out my shot wasn’t up to date. I ended up spending an entire morning at the doctors waiting for my shot. But I’m up to date now and safe from horrible diseases that come from my clumsiness. Gardens can be dangerous places if you aren’t careful. It might pay to check when your last tetanus shot was and go and get one if you need to.
But things are coming along nicely in the garden, I have sown the last of the seeds – except corn and beans. I like to sow those directly on Labour Weekend. Also, the first of my transplants out of seed raising mix into 5cm pots of potting mix has been done. It is just a few right now but in a week or so there will be hundreds of them – because I sowed with a heavy hand because my seeds were getting a little old - but most of them popped up.
One of my favourite things to use when transplanting is Seaweed Tonic. It’s not a food, but a tonic to help reduce the stress of transplant shock and promotes root growth, so it is really helpful at this stage, so I give everything a good soak! You can find out more about the wonderful benefits of Seaweed Tonic here: https://www.yates.co.nz/products/fertilisers-tonics/certified-organic/yates-thrive-natural-seaweed-tonic/
Oh, and this week’s winner of the free seed is Jungle Jane! Congratulations. I’ll get those seeds off to you as soon as I can.
I hope you all have a fabulous week in the garden and as always – if you want to get in touch leave a comment below.
