A Start on Preserving

With only five gherkins ready this morning (not quite enough for relish yet), I decided to try my hand at some refrigerator preserves. I figured this way, we can see if we like them before I start preserving them on mass into sterilized jars. Sitting on my bench cooling is now a jar of gherkins, and also a jar of jalapeños. I have one child (my youngest) who is particularly fond of both normally, and a hubby. I do too. Hopefully my version measures up. To be on the safe side I have removed the seeds from the jalapeños.  I am glad I did. The heat has certainly intensified over the past week (I always tend to nibble chllies whenever I work with them).

It is certainly starting to feel a bit more like summer up here over the last few days. The change in temp is certainly agreeing with some plants, but also playing havoc with others. But at the end of the day, that is the hand we have been dealt with this summer. We will have to take the good with the bad and adapt as we go. It is definitely a season for further learning and refining of practises.

I have included two more of my dahlias. These are my two cactus varieties. I have one seed one that is started to emerge today. It has an interesting variegated petal with some stripes appearing that I will be watching closely).
