I think it's really easy just to grow stuff that you will eat especially if space is precious in your garden.
We are fortunate to have plenty of room and we are also on septic so have a large drainage field that really isn't suited for edibles. Some say it's ok, but for me it's not worth the risk.
So I use the drainage field for growing fun crops. Last year it was luffa and boy did they take off. I swear it's because of the poo water! The bonus is that I don't need to water at all. The field gets watered multiple times a day so it's a matter of set and forget.
This year it's Giant Pumpkins!
Being full sun it's the perfect spot and as they aren't eating pumpkins it's the perfect crop.
You'll see in the photo that I've also planted a row of carnations. I've tried and tried to grow them but often with poor results. Seems these ones like sun and poo water as they are taking off.
Keen to know what fun crops you are growing this year. We are also doing pink popcorn again. That stuff is seriously the best popcorn I've ever tasted!
