This is the last of the tomatoes for now. I say for now as I will try a couple of late season tomatoes in the greenhouse to extend our harvest. We found this tasty cherry tomato called Fantastico which is resistant to late blight and it did well last year so will try again mid summer.
These are determinate tomatoes except for Artisan Blush. We have Patio Yellow F1, Sub Arctic Plenty, and Golden Nugget F1. Patio Yellow produces masses of yellow cherry tomatoes. I'm not impressed with Golden Nugget but had the seeds from last season.
They have been getting big in pots in the greenhouse and are ready for the big world outside. This is my new method of growing in pots. Half bury the pot so the excess water goes into the ground and the roots can follow the water. I find growing in pots requires way too much watering for my liking. This gets me the benefit of container growing (easy to fertilise, control weeds and control soil splash) without the excessive watering all the time.
Each got a good dose of Yates Tomato Feed and some hay to keep the soil moist.
I'm thinking that the fence will make it easy to support them. Being determinate, they pretty much sort themselves out but tying a few main stems to the fence will help them if the wind pucks picks up.
Hope everyone is having a great long weekend. We have had some excellent gardening weather here in Northland.
