This is plan 2 for hopefully limiting blight impacting our tomatoes.
Last year I had one bed dedicated to tomatoes. Seemed like a great plan until the outbreak of late blight. Was definitely a case of all my eggs in one basket.
This year they are spread out and I'm also putting good space between them.
Blog one was using pots. This one is a strip of plants under plastic. I made a mound and then dug good sized holes where the plants were to go. New compost and fertilizer went in the holes. Then came the irrigation (soaker hose) and finally black plastic. Slits cut in the plastic allow the plant to go in and the plastic stops soil borne bacteria splashing up. Another good theory but only time will tell if it works.
The plants do love the warmth from the sun on the black plastic so there is at least that.
The final picture is the first decent strawberry harvest and what I like to call jellybean tomatoes. These are cherry tomatoes grown in the greenhouse over winter. As they were not growing fast in winter they have remained tiny and ripened at this size. A wee bit annoying to harvest but delicious nonetheless.
