We have had a lovely few days away. We spent 3 nights in the Wairarapa - the first night at a gorgeous little cottage in the country with an outside bath tub in which we lay (with hot water and bubbles of course!) and watched the stars on a beautiful clear night.
We also visited several gardens which were great but left me with a bit of a "why?" moment. I have done heaps of garden visits, ambles, rambles and tours over the years and have noticed one thing. Very few of the amazing gardens that are open to the public have a comprehensive vegetable/edible garden. Shrubs, perennials, flowers, hedges, sculptures and natives abound.... but with all the space and ground and potential for food production there is often just a little, if any, area devoted to fruit and vegetables. Don't get me wrong, I love all of those things but if I were given a choice of either a decorative or an edible garden it would be edible any time - often they are just as pretty as a garden border and way more useful!!
However in saying all of that the biggest joy of coming home this weekend was the sight (and smell) of my first sweet pea flower.
It's not edible but it is in my vegie garden.
