Roses are in gorgeous full bloom across much of the country now. Enjoy the rainbow of colours and heady scents - it's easy to understand why rose-lovers adore them!
Some simple tips to make the most of your show:
Deadhead spent flowers regularly, or cut blooms for a vase. If you're deadheading, don't just nip off the flower; it's good to cut further down the stem to an outward facing bud. This boosts the next flush of flowers, which won't be far away.
Give plants a deep, generous watering at least once a week (more often for potted roses). Watering at the base of the plants rather than over the foliage help reduce the risk of disease.
Fertilise each week with a purpose-designed rose food, like Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food. It’s a complete fertiliser that contains the right balance of nutrients to encourage healthy leaf growth and lots of flowers.
Monitor for signs of common leaf diseases, like black spot or powdery mildew, which can be more common after periods of damp weather. Spraying rose bushes with Yates Super Shield every fortnight is an effective way to prevent damage to your roses. Yates Super Shield or Yates Rose Gun will also control rose pests like aphids and caterpillars, which makes them the 'go-to' rose protection sprays for rose growers.
Spread mulch around the base of your roses (but don't let it touch the stems, leave a small gap). This keeps the roots cool as the weather warms up.
If you have rambling roses that only flower in spring, sadly their show is over...so now's the ideal time to prune them (remember to get the pruning done before the end of January).
