For those who love the look of the Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), but live in the warmer more temperate climatic zones, then Snowflakes (Leucojum vernum) are a great choice for your garden! They show similar form to the Snowdrops, but differ in their height, amount of flowers per stem and produce an abundance of white flowers with small green spots on the outside of the petals.
How to grow snowflakes in a garden
- Choose a well-drained spot in the garden that gets full sun to part shade.
- Enrich the soil with some compost and Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone with Seaweed before planting.
- Place the bulb directly where the plant is to grow at a depth of 7 cm and 10 cm apart.
- Water well to keep the soil moist.
- Once shoots start to appear, feed with Yates Thrive Rose & Flower Granular Plant Food. TIP: For an added boost, apply Yates Thrive Natural Fish & Seaweed+ Plant Food Concentrate.
- Feed the plant regularly until the leaves start to die down. This will provide it with more strength next season. Plants can be left in the ground undisturbed.
How to grow snowflakes in a pot
- Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place it in a position that gets full sun to part shade.
- Fill the pot with Yates Premium Potting Mix.
- Place the bulb directly where the plant is to grow at a depth of 7 cm and 10 cm apart.
- Once shoots start to appear, feed regularly with Yates Thrive Roses & Flowers Liquid Plant Food. TIP: For an added boost, apply Yates Thrive Natural Fish & Seaweed+ Plant Food Concentrate.
- Feed the plant regularly until the leaves start to die down. This will provide it with more strength next season.
- Once the leaves have died down, remove the bulbs from the container and store until next season in a cool dry place.
