To celebrate our 140th year in the seed business, we're excited to bring back some old, old favourites from our archives!
Broccoli Romanesco is a nutty tasting Italian lime-green broccoli with a beautiful spiral patterned head. Also known as 'cauliflower Romanesco'. This heirloom variety has been grown since the 16th century. Ideal steamed until tender or delicious roasted.
Romanesco broccoli has a very unique claim to fame that fascinates mathematicians: the distinctive spirals are rare natural examples of fractal geometry, because they form repeating 'golden' logarithmic spirals that follow a Fibonacci sequence...they're mathematically perfect. The data indicates they're pretty tasty, too!
Sow seed into trays of Yates Black Magic® Seed Raising Mix. Firm down and keep moist. Transplant seedlings when about 7 cm high.
Choose a sunny, well-drained position. Prior to planting work in Yates Thrive® Natural Blood & Bone. Once seedlings have established, feed with Yates Thrive® Natural Fish Seaweed + Plant Food. Protect from snails and slugs.
Plant brassica vegetables in a different position each year to avoid soil-borne diseases. Harvest the head while it is still tight and before the flowers open.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct Sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
