Blog Type:Mini Challenge - Meet your Neighbours

Hello Yates Growing Community!

My name is Kristy and I live in a lovely little green suburb in the Waitakere Ranges.

This is my first year participating in the Vegie Growing Challenge and I have never written a blog before – so lots of firsts for me!

We bought our first family home only 9 months ago and I am eager to roll up my sleeves as this will be my first year growing in my own garden.  Our small property has mostly clay soil that becomes very boggy (hence my constantly muddy toes) and was a very neglected overgrown site.

The first lockdown was a blessing in disguise as it gave us a chance to tackle the mountains of weeds, do a little pruning and have a general tidy up.  During this time, I also binged heavily on gardening blogs, finding lots of inspiration, and managed to start a small flower garden with lots of bulbs and sweet peas sown.

Auckland’s second lockdown provided an opportunity to demolish the small rundown garden bed and build two large beds as well as construct my first ever greenhouse.  We managed to transplant some of the existing silverbeet, spinach and rhubarb from the old bed to the new ones so now I have a somewhat blank canvas to prepare for spring planting.

This year I hope to grow from seed (fingers crossed) vegetables and flowers for the garden.  I would love to have at the end of this journey a colour filled productive garden that will help feed the six voracious vegetarians we are.

Along the way I hope to learn lots of tips from the Yates Growing Community and try my hand at companion planting, attracting beneficial insects and with luck overcome the colonies of slugs and snails residing here!

Thank you for taking the time to read my first blog and I look forward to reading yours.

Happy Growing!
