Caterpillars may bore into fruit, leaving small brown holes with visible frass outside the hole, but causing interior damage and rotting. Fruit is usually ruined for consumption.
Solution
Leafroller caterpillars can tunnel into fruit or stems to feed, causing lots of damage to fruit.
White, fluffy insects that cluster on branches and stems. They look a bit like clumps of cotton wool stuck to branches.
Solution
White, powdery mould on leaves, particularly the young growing tips.
Solution
A fungal disease of apple and pear trees. Lesions form on branches, ruining fruit and causing wilting and dieback. Lesions develop into large, sunken dead cankers.
Wait for dry conditions, then remove affected branches or cut out and burn all infected plant parts. For larger cankers, use a knife or chisel to slice out the infected tissue. Sterilise tools between cuts, to prevent the disease spreading.
