Radishes are fast, but healthy food! They grow really quickly and can be ready to pick in just 4 to 8 weeks. Their colourful, round, red balls are crisp and crunchy and ideal for slicing thinly into salads or making into fun edible critters. Give them a ‘grow’!

How to grow radishes in a garden

  1. Find a sunny spot that receives at least 6 hours of sun a day.
  2. Fill starter pots or trays with Yates Black Magic Seed Raising Mix. Sow seeds 6mm deep, cover, firm down and water well. Keep the soil moist so the seeds don’t dry out.
  3. While the seedlings are growing, choose a sunny spot in the garden and prepare the planting area well by loosening the soil and digging in Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone with Seaweed. You can also sow direct into the prepared beds.
  4. Once seedlings have emerged, feed weekly with Yates Thrive Natural Fish Seaweed+ Plant Food Concentrate. Allow seedlings to grow to about 3-4cm before transplanting.
  5. When transplanting them into your prepared garden bed, thin out weak plants and ensure seedlings are well spaced (check label for specifications). Mulch with an organic mulch, such as pea or lucerne straw and water in well.
  6. Feed weekly with Yates Thrive Natural Fish Seaweed+ Plant Food Concentrate.
  7. Harvest while roots are young and tender. Leaving them in the ground can spoil their taste.
  8. Make successive sowings every few weeks to extend the harvest window.

Growing Tips

  • Radishes are great to sow with carrots. The radish seeds germinate first and help make the soil softer for carrots. Radishes are quick growing, so you can start picking the radishes while you wait for the carrots to grow.
  • You can pick a few of the radish leaves for salads before the round red roots are ready.
  • Radishes can be picked when they’re quite small up to when they are a few centimetres across. The earlier they are picked, the more sweet and tender they are, so don’t leave them in the ground for too long.
