How to grow spring onion in a garden

  1. Choose a spot in the garden that receives full sun. Enrich the soil with Yates Thrive Natural Blood & Bone with Seaweed. If the soil is clay based, add gypsum and fork in well.
  2. Make furrow about 6 mm deep and sprinkle the seeds over the furrow. To get a continuous crop, sow the seeds every week for a few weeks.
  3. Cover seeds lightly with soil. To retain moisture, mulch the sown area. Water in to keep the soil moist.
  4. Once they have sprouted (about 10 to 14 days) you can thin them such that plant space is about 5 cm apart and space between rows is 15 cm.
  5. Feed every few weeks with Yates Thrive Natural Fish Seaweed+ Plant Food Concentrate.
  6. Harvest them after 8 to 10 weeks by pulling out the entire plant by holding it at the base of the stem near the ground.

Spring Onion (Organic)

Crisp and crunchy, with plump white stems topped with rich green leaves. Popular variety. Very versatile in salads, stir-fries and as a garnish.

Spring Onion 'Straight Leaf'

This variety holds its stem and leaves straight upwards which means the plants are tidier and less prone to disease.

Growing Tips

  • Avoid over-watering, especially while they are germinating, to avoid seed rot.
  • Young seedlings are susceptible to snail and slug attack. Control them with Yates Blitzem Snail & Slug Pellets
